Welcome back - Upgrade to phpBB3 Complete

Postby Stunned on Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:20 pm

This site will be upgraded to phpBB3 on Sunday November 16th.

This will require bringing down cc.net for a bit. By bit, I mean, most likely, a few hours.

We may or may not have a 'coyote look' at that point. Trying to make that happen (at least a little bit), but I'm not sure we'll be ready with a decent look by then. But transitioning to the new forum software is more important than the look in the short run.

Rest assured that we will update the look after the transition.

The upgrade is likely to start around noon Arizona time on that day, but there will be another announcement about the site going down at least an hour in advance.

Just a reminder that tomorrow (Sunday 11/16), the site will be going down to upgrade to phpBB3. I'll announce again tomorrow around 11:00 am. The site will be going down around 12:00 pm (az time).

As I stated earlier, I really don't know how long the site will be down. I expect it will be a couple of hours. This is based on how long a trial run took to complete. But I can't guarantee that time. If, for whatever reason, the site goes down for longer than expected, then be aware that we'll bring it back up as soon as possible (within reason, of course--gotta work and sleep ;) ).

Also, if you haven't already seen phpBB3 sites, be aware that the look and feel is different and may take some getting used to. Initially, we'll be using a default style, but will provide better options over time. phpBB3 has many more features than phpBB2 both from an end user perspective as well as an administrative perspective. So we'll all be 'getting used to' the new board once we've switched. In the long run, we think you'll like it...

Please let us know if you run into problems and/or have any questions.

If you run into problems, being specific and exact as possible about what you saw/experienced is very helpful. I don't anticipate problems, but you never know...

Not sure what you mean. Are you talking about 'coloration' indicating that new, unread posts exists?

If so, the coloring is somewhat subtle in my opinion: a new or updated post will have 'red' indicating its new. I think there is a 'find' as well, but I'll have to 'find' it...

If you are on the outer most board index, there is a 'view new posts' link up at the top border to the overall index. Is that what you were looking for?

No problem. We'll all be in learning mode for a bit. When I first saw phpBB3 (at least the default styles) I wasn't sure if I liked it. It has grown on me over time, and I actually like it now (although there are some aspects of the graphic set that I'm still not real fond of). You definitely have to get used to the new ways to do old things. And, of course, the new things that are available.

One thing that I think folks will like a lot is the ability to quote from multiple posts while replying. Gone are the days where if you want to quote multiple people in the same post (or just from multiple posts) you had to jump through ridiculous hoops to be able to do so. It's easy now...

And once this settles in, we'll begin doing a number of the other things we've been meaning to get to for a while.

So hang in there, the site will be getting better and better...

And here's the first added benefit made much easier by the upgrade. Note that there is a new 'youtube' BBCode.

To use it, press the button and paste the 'id' of the youtube video. The id is the part after the 'v='. For example, at youtube, there is a URL of:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl4XcVc9V6w

Using the Hl4XcVc9V6w part in the BBCode (note you can mouse over the 'youtube' button for a hint/reminder) yields:

Wow what a difference. It will definetly take some time to get used to but I think it's a great improvement.
Thanks Rick

Step at a time Ghost. I doubt anyone likes the blue hues: me included.

I doubt anyone likes the new images (the light bulb, the circle with text, etc.) either.

This is why I mentioned that we were starting with the default style: because I knew the blue, new graphics, and layout would be a shock.

We'll get it corrected/improved. I'm asking for some patience here--lots going on simultaneously. This was an important first step.

No time for patience, get on it now.... ;)

You know... maybe another mod would help with the transition.......
