Highest point totals and when

Postby Robert Earthpig on Thu Jan 28, 2010 12:21 pm

The Coyotes could reach the 100 point plateau this season, if they continue to play as they have been.
What was the highest point total in a season for the Jets/Coyotes franchise and when and who led the team in scoring?

106 points, sometime in the mid-70's, led by Bobby Hull

Are we only talking NHL seasons?

NHL only answer(s):

The best Jets season was in 1984/'85 (with 96 points). Dale 'Ducky' Hawerchuk lead the Jets in goals (53), assists (77) and points (130).

The best Coyotes season was in 2001/'02 (with 95 points). Daymond Langkow lead in scoring (62 points), Danny Briere lead in goals (32) and Bobby Francis captured the Jack Adams trophy. (had to look the points up)

Yargh. And yargh, NHL seasons only.

The 84/85 Jets were lethal!
Ducky led the way, as you noted. Paul MacLean was second in scoring with 41 goals and 60 helpers, giving us two 100 men on the year.
Third in scoring was Thomas Steen with 30 goals and 54 helpers and Laurie Boschman, a fine grinder, was fourth with 32-44-76 and fifth was Brian Mullen. His 32 goals and 39 assist gave him 71 points and the Jets five guys with 70 or more points.
Sixth was Dougie Smail with 31/35/66 and our top blueliner was seventh in scoring, as Dave Babych had 13/49/62. Next up was another blueiner, Randy Carlyle, who had 13/38/51.
Brian Hayward was in goal and he finished the season with a 3.86 GAA. Ahh, the 80s!
The Jets had six 30 plus goal scorers and an incredible eight 20 plus, as Scotty Arneil and Perry Turnball each scored 22.
We had 13 players with 30 or more points.
Unfortunately, a not uncommon thing happened the next year to the Jets. They followed up that monster season with a lame 26 win, 47 loss, seven ties (59 pts) debacle in 85/86.
Ducky led the way with 46/59/105. Boschman was second in scoring with 27/42/69. MacLean fell to 27/29/56 in 69 games and Babych only played 19 games, netting 4/12. Those losses hurt the Jets.

The 01/02 dogs were led by the guys you noted, Matz. Doaner was third in scoring with 20/29/49 and Numminen had a big season, scoring 13/35/48. Handzus helped us forget about Kaching by posting a fine two-way 14/30/44 and Nagy chipped in with 23/19/42. Claude Lemieux had his one good season in a dogs' uni, with 16/25/41. Kolanos posted 11/11/22 in his rookie season, and Brad May chimed in with 10/12/22 sparkplug points. Danil Markov also spark plugged the team, posting 6/30/36.
Two 'big' off season pickups busted on us. Sergei Berezin, the speedy Russian from Toronto, got 7/9/16 and Brian Savage and his repaired broken neck posted 6/6/12.
Who remembers Radoslav Suchy? He got 5/12/17 in his best NHL season.
The biggest reason we finished so high? Sean Burke. He posted 2.29 GAA and .92o SP and nailed down 33 wins.
