TSN has us signing Mike Smith from Tampa for 2yr - $4mil.

Yep and the way GMDM says it, it looks like he's coming to the 'dale:

“We are very pleased to sign Mike to a multi-year contract,” said Maloney. “Mike is a big, talented goaltender who we feel will excel in our system. We are excited to have him join us in the desert.”

I hope that Burke can do for Smith, what Allaire did for him.

Like Burke (and Bryz), Smith has a huge frame, making it difficult to beat him, especially if he's on and playing his angles well. He handles the puck with much more confidence than Bryz, which will aid the Coyotes in exiting the own zone.

Smith has the ability to steal games but he is not good at handling a heavy workload and he has a knack for inconsistency.

Among the available options and considering the ownership situation, this was probably the best that we could hope for. :shrugg:

I think we could have done better, but perhaps he was signed as insurance? He's a pretty solid back-up, so we may be able to throw him (or LaBarbera)) into a trade offer once the FA signings calm down.

Maybe, but what the Avs reportedly gave up for Varlamov, I'm not seeing a tender moving without a giant bucket of gold heading the other way.

Budaj was signed by MTL for 2yr - $2.3mil.

For that price, I think I'd rather have him than Mike Smith. Budaj's numbers aren't as good, but he played for the Avs.

Vokoun is still available.

1. - Vokoun
2. - Smith
2.a - LaBarbera -- Aye, he would be a valuable addition to the Pirate ship in Portland. Image

Vokoun and Smith would be a wicked combo but it won't happen.
GMDM is being killed slowly with cheapness. Poor bastard.
No money so don't spend money but without spending money to get a star player or to help this team improve, no new bums in the seats and no new bums in the seats means death to NHL hockey in the desert. Eff me gently. What a shitty situation.

All that depressing crap said, Smith will be good for 45-50 games and Labarbara is good to play more than he has. Smith has been a very good goalie in the past - a few short years ago he looked like he could become a doozy.
Who remembers Sean Burke before he came to Phoenix? He'd had some stellar campaigns early on, like Smith, but then faltered in the middle of his career, like Smith. Maybe Smith can pull a Burke for we needy dog fans. :beerchug:

Color me surprised  http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=568351&navid=mod-rr-headlines

1 year at 1.5 million? He couldn't do better than that? I suppose he could be a big D.C. fan.

 F*ck me!!!

The rich get richer... and we pay Mike Smith $2.0mm/year. :screwy:

Obviously Vokoun sees value in going to a contender and we could never have gotten him for that number, but playing behind a Tippett coached team can be career revitalizing - see LaBarbera.

$1.5mm is all it took for Vokoun to sign on the dotted line - albeit for the Caps. :palm:

Who knows, we may have had an offer on the table, but Vokoun wasn't interested. Of course, you can't blame him; it'll be rough for us to even come close to the playoffs (in the West) with our lineup. He must be figuring that he won't have to work as hard to make it to the playoffs (in the East) as he would for other teams; after all, a star offense will always trump a defense first team.

I feel sorry for our goalies this upcoming season :-(

The Flyers and Avs got shafted in the starting goalie wars this off season. GMGM for the win!
