Report: Coyotes’ GM Don Maloney threatened to trade players

Postby Matzel on Thu Dec 04, 2014 9:59 pm

Dhiren Mahiban wrote:Following the Coyotes 3-0 loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday night, GM Don Maloney went into the Arizona dressing room, which he rarely does post-game, to have conversation with his players.
According to hockey insider Bob McKenzie, Maloney threatened his players, who currently have limited no-trade clauses, and told them he would seek trades.
Maloney then followed up with the player’s agents seeking a list of teams they would be willing to waive their no-trade clause for.
Players who have reportedly garnered interest from other teams include Keith Yandle, Antoine Vermette, Mikkel Boedker and Martin Hanzal.
Per CapGeek, players with some form of a no-trade clause in their contract include David Moss, Martin Erat, Zbynek Michalek and Mike Smith.
At that point in the schedule, Arizona had won just one of six games. The Coyotes split a recent trip to Alberta winning in Edmonton and then losing again to the Flames.

Arizona plays host to the L.A. Kings tonight.

What says you? 'Bout time for a shake-up?

I think GMDM's magic has worn off a little bit. Smith deal certainly doesn't look good as of now. Partial NMC for players will hamstring him in trying to make deals.

I just hope they continue to suck. Badly - especially on the road. At home I am wishing for close fought losses with high entertainment value for the faithful. TANK for McSaviour!

Oh no, please don't trade me! I might end up on a team that can actually score/win consistently.

Clause folks:
Z can specify 8 team no trade list - As much as I like his blocking ability, if we can't score that skill is useless
Doan has a no-move clause - should be willing to go elsewhere (things ain't looking too nice here)
Erat has a no-move clause - It took him a while and I'd like to give him the rest of the season, but I wouldn't lose any sleep
Smith has a no-move clause - even if he was willing to waive his NMC, I doubt anyone would want him this season

The rest are up for grabs:
Hanzal - we should keep him, but if the right offensive player is offered, I'd be okay with him leaving (cough Hall & Yakupov)
Boedker - I'd like to keep him (we probably shouldn't trade any offense-inclined forwards), but he seems only to be able to make pretty plays that rarely end up on the scoreboard
Vermette - No problem seeing him go despite his decent success
Yandle - Please, please, someone take him for a decent trade

My thoughts on the only organizational players that should *not* be on the trade block:

Domi
OEL
Rieder
Gormley

Hanzal - if this guy could stay in the line-up and avoid injuries he's worth keeping around.

All others can go for quality returns.

PS: I find Boedker very frustrating to watch on most nights. He has speed to burn just about every opposing player but he rarely uses it to full effect. Great talent that seems to be stuck in second gear with occasional herky-jerky shifts into overdrive. Reminds me a bit of Sjostrom, who was also very speedy albeit less skilled than Boeds.

My first thought was: How the fookety fook does Dave Moss have any form of NTC?

I'm not sure Moss has such an arrangement. The article cited capgeek as a source, but capgeek doesn't list any NTC or NMC (and they're usually decent).

According to the 4th period, David Moss has a limited NMC as he can list up to 7 teams he will not accept a trade to.

That should be from no season ever.

I'm guessing when DM threatened them with trades they all rather liked the sound of it so are continuing to be shite deliberately.

Or they are just shite.
