DeMo will likely fetch us a nice return come the trade deadline. We'll see then what other GMs in the league think of him. Teams heading to the big push will love to add a guy like Morris. He's entering his prime years JUST NOW.

Interesting… at least we don't suck according to Tavares' agent!

TORONTO SUN: Steve Simmons recently reported agent Pat Brisson, who represents highly-touted Canadian prospect John Tavares, said his client will report to whichever teams selects him in this year's upcoming entry draft. Tavares is expected to go first overall and the NY Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Atlanta Thrashers, Colorado Avalanche and Phoenix Coyotes stand the best chance to win the draft lottery and the right to select the first overall pick. Brisson told Simmons if it were up to him he'd avoid "Tampa, Atlanta and the Island at all costs" but it's not up to him.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Given the expectations that will be weighed upon Tavares' shoulders it might be best if he went to a team where he wouldn't face as much pressure to carry the offense in his rookie season, something he'll be expected to do if he's drafted as anticipated by the Islanders. Still, some rookies have thrived being thrust into those positions (Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Ovechkin) so it's quite possible Tavares could emulate those greats.

NESN.COM: James Murphy reports a source told him to keep an eye on the Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes as potential trade partners. The Coyotes are believed shopping young forward Peter Mueller. It's believed the Bruins have "kicked the tires" on Carolina's Ray Whitney and Columbu's Raffi Torres. Another name that's out there is Toronto's Alexei Ponikarovsky.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Mueller probably won't provide that scoring punch the Bruins need at this point in the season. The Bruins have the draft picks that would entice the Hurricanes but Whitney must agree to the deal. Torres won't help them offensively. I wouldn't rule out Ponikarovsky as the two teams have a recent trade history.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Tom Reed reports the Philadelphia Flyers apparently have serious interest in Blue Jackets forward Raffi Torres but lack a first or second round pick in this year's draft. It's believed the Jackets are seeking a second rounder for Torres.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: He'd be a good fit with the Flyers but unless the Jackets cannot find a better offer for Torres the Flyers probably won't land him.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports if the Minnesota Wild haven't re-signed defenseman Marek Zidlicky by Wednesday it'll be "absolutely shocking" if he's not traded. Their priority is to re-sign him but GM Chuck Fletcher puts Zidlicky in the same category as Kim Johnsson and Fletcher dealt Johnsson to Chicago for Cam Barker.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Keep a close eye on this situation.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Jim Gintonio reports Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney won't part with his top assets to bring in a player who might be gone at season's end.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: They are rumored shopping Peter Mueller, whose stock on the club has fallen dramatically this season.

COURIERPOST ONLINE: Chuck Gormley reports Flyers forward Jeff Carter's name continues to float around in trade rumor but he hopes to remain with the club. Gormley reports it's not the first time Carter has been mentioned in trade rumors in recent years but he wonders if the Flyers can afford him and his $5 million salary for next season given the free agents they hope to re-sign plus their goaltending situation. Gormley suggests the LA Kings' Jonathan Bernier as a possible trade target, suggesting they might also land winger Wayne Simmonds if they included Carter in the deal or perhaps getting creative by shipping Carter to the Maple Leafs for Tomas Kaberle and a first round pick then send Braydon Coburn to the Coyotes for forward Shane Doan.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Gormley forgets the Leafs don't have a first round pick and the Coyotes aren't moving team captain Shane Doan. He does however make a good point that Carter's salary could hinder the Flyers in their free agent and goaltending plans. Given their need to re-sign Hamhuis and Coburn I think the Flyers will seriously consider re-signing Leighton.

4th period has a rumor article about the Bruins scouts at the Habs/Yotes game last night. Maybe if the ownership thing is settled in the next month, they can do something, but probably not until then.

Molinari also suggested “there’s a chance” pending UFAs on playoff contenders like Dallas’ Brad Richards, Colorado’s Milan Hejduk and Phoenix’s Radim Vrbata might be available.

There's definitely a chance Vrbata could be available, if the right offer came along. Just don't give him away.

Rental for rental would be nice... Vrbata + a pick for a 2nd line (or 1st line) Center (pick pending re-sign would be nice) Or a top-four D-man

Or perhaps a Vrbata + pick for 2nd line center (or top 3 D) with 1-2 seasons on their contract.

I wouldn't mind trading Fiddler (he is one of our players with decent rental value) if we can't re-sign him before the deadline (I'm guessing several playoff-bound teams wouldn't mind adding his presence to their 3rd or 4th line. I like his play and would hate to see him go, but if we could get a decent top 4 D-man or package him for a struggling 3rd or 4th line center, it might be worth considering (again if we don't re-sign him).

The following was in Spector's glarble this a.m. — “The Phoenix Coyotes won’t be as aggressive at this year’s trade deadline as they were last year, as they lack the cap space..."

Huh?

Not lack of cap space, but lack of budget space I presume.

I would hope so, seeing as how we are barely at the cap floor, or so I believed.

From the speculators, Brad Boyes from Buffalo to alleviate their cap woes and to give us a versatile center/winger. Not sure who we'd trade to make it fit cap and budget wise, but an interesting speculation.
