I pretty much like every song Pretty Maids ever put out. This is a Deep Purple cover that I absolutely love! Better than the original in my mind:

I can listen to it but it would not make my regular playlist. I have no problem with speed or heavy but the vocals are grinding on my nerves after a while.

I never could get into God Forbid... I had friends who liked them, but the vox are too screamy for me and I could barely hear the bass (I'm a bassist/vox person by the way). Now, the drummer was pretty good (for the genre), but the guitars didn't really grab me either.

I also don't see much unique about them (in terms of sound), but am not too familiar with their full body of work, so I could be jumping to judgement. To me (based on the few songs I've heard from them), they seem to sound like all the other Speed/Thrash bands that were appearing in the mid to late 1990s (and into the 2000s). Of course, if you want to point me to a particular CD, I'd be happy to give it a listen...

being a bass guitarist.. god forbid has some mad riffs that i couldnt pull off

I didn't mean to imply that he wasn't good; in fact, he may be excellent, but they "mixed" him out. I come from the school where you can easily hear the bass-line from the rest. Of course my laptop may not have the best speakers. As an aspiring bassist (for 20 years  ), I lean more towards the "groovy" side of the spectrum (a la Mike Watt), so I tend to shy away from the speed demons (except for Steve Harris).

No driving today (where I listen to most of my music), but I came across some old Mike Watt stuff, so I've been listening to some of these today. Anyway, this is one song that I like.

Did someone say German rockers?

This video always makes me chuckle a bit (especially 20 years later)...

Helloween never took themselves too seriously. I was a pretty big fan of the pumpkin heads after Walls of Jericho and Keeper of the 7 keys (Part I+II), but got turned off when I met the band at a Judas Priest show in Hamburg, Germany. Michael Kiske (vocals) felt like he didn't have to stand in line for beer or to take a bathroom break and came across as a pompous a$$. Shortly after that, Kai Hansen took his musical genius to his new project, Gamma Ray, and it was all downhill from there for Helloween.

This was a tongue in cheek song that I liked from after the split:

I like some of their import stuff; Kiske also has some nice solos (although a bit on the soft) In terms of pompousness, was it a festival or something? I ask because you'd think the dressing rooms would have their own beer/bathroom (or hell, most festivals typically have a separate area for artists). Of course things may be different in Germany :) I'm not saying his acting out was justified, but artists typically deserve a bit better treatment in my opinion.

Another thing, I've learned never to meet artists (musical or otherwise) in person, it destroys the illusive connection between the music and the artist. For example, I saw Jon Oliva at a bar show (Savatage some time between 2000 and 2003). If you know anything about him, he's a recovering alcoholic, but he was chilling at the bar drinking hard liquor :-| Admitedly, he wasn't lead vocalist, but it sort of deflated my anticipation for the show (I never had the opportunity to see them live before then). Now if I see a musician, celebrity, or author somewhere (it doesn't happen often), I briefly glance up and move on with my life.

Anyway, I was listening to this artist yesterday (I haven't listened to anything today yet, but I'm guessing it will be Savatage :) )

Helloween did not perform. The band was there to see the show, among the rest of us regular folks.

Going to see these guys on Saturday. Can't say that I listen to them that often anymore, but it should be an interesting show at least!

[Primus Video]

I had never heard of these guys before and this isn't usually my favorite genre... but I really dig this tune.

Not sure why... but it made me think of these guys:

Enjoy the show, I hear Les is awesome live. I've been meaning to catch them for a couple of years; it just hasn't worked into my schedule.

If you haven't yet, make sure to check out some of his side projects; I sometimes dig them more than the Primus stuff for some reason.

I've been meaning to see them since 92 and it never worked out for me either. I'm quite excited actually. The openers, Portugal The Band are also intriguing. I'll link one of their videos below. The sound is pretty soft, but the video is interesting. I'll let ya know how the show goes.

I remember owning a "Les Claypool and the Holy Mackarel" tape in University. That was awesome. I had another one called M.I.R.V which was really neat. It had a Star Wars "Cantina Song" cover with Les playing some weird instrument called the Cosmodrome. Did you know Les auditioned for Metallica?

Show was awesome. Les played an amped single string bucket guitar, they wore pig masks. Good times. Turns out I'm getting a little old for mosh pits though. Pretty hurting the next day.
