Got a new Dell studio XPS laptop...

Postby Matzel on Thu Dec 03, 2009 8:41 pm

It is S-W-E-E-T-!

I guess you don't realize how crappy your (almost 4 year) old laptop is until you test drive a new one.

I am just trying to get used to Windows 7 but the speed, graphics and features of the laptop are impressive. Now I am contemplating getting fibre optics for internet, HDTV and home phone...

Problem is that I can not get Centre Ice transferred from my satellite provider. I might have to hold off for now. Aliant is offering a free 26" HDTV (LCD) to all new customers signing up by December 22nd. That'd make a nice x-mas gift for one of my kids....

I am not big on PC gaming but this machine could probably run just about anything out there. I do (a little bit of) gaming on the PS3.

On the old laptop I played things like WSOP, Hexic and Trackmania - and that's probably all I will do with the new one.

Studio XPS 16 Notebook

Blue Ray Combo Drive

Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6 - 2.8 GHz 6M/8 threads)

4GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm

15.6" Wide Screen 16:9, 900p HD+ WLED LCD

ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB graphics

Windows 7 OS Home Premium (64 bit)

320 GB 7200 RPM SATA HD

plus all the usual stuff like WiFi Card, 9 cell battery, black high gloss finish on the case, backlit keyboard, etc.

The one thing I didn't even consider before getting this laptop, that I am really enjoying tremendously, is the keyboard. The keys are outstanding and it may sound corny, but typing is really fun on these keys.

My experience is fresh on this specific machine, I have only had it for a week. However, this is my second Dell laptop and I am on my first Dell Desktop. All of these computers have been very good. The only thing I have been disappointed in was the battery life of my previous laptop. I replaced the battery annually and would have hoped for it to last longer. However, I use the laptop a lot and maybe a year is all that one can expect?

Nice, not going to be short of oomph with that lot.

Always go with Dell's personally, I know their customer service gets a bad press (does over here anyway) but the build quality is always very solid. Once bought a machine off a different manufacturer and had to open it up to connect up the power to the DVD drive :palm:

Totally agree.

I had been skeptical about Dell, preferring local tech store purchases, but the first product bought with Dell made me a regular customer with the company. I have been impressed with the service and see myself buying with them in the future unless something drastic happens.

It's like the energizer bunny..... keeps going and going and ...

Still on the first battery which works like it did fresh out of the box. No concerns whatsoever with the XPS.

Hey did ya ever get used to that Windows 7?

;)

I'd probably have bought new PC by now if I had heard better things about Windows 8. Maybe I can wait until Windows Bolero...

Windows 8 isn't too bad (I have it on my new Tablet), but if you don't have a touch-screen monitor (or whatever the proper term for it is), I wouldn't worry about an upgrade any time soon. Still, I do like the tiles (for mobile devices).

That ol' Dell XPS is still going strong. I have it sitting on a chill mat to keep it running (fairly) cool but it's thrashed around and lugged back-and-forth daily. It is used each and every day as I take it to work where it runs 7 - 9 hours. Then at home I run it some more...

Oh, oh. There might be trouble in paradise. The Dell XPS just went to the shop. It may have died last night... :-(
Now I may have to make that dreaded switch to Windows10.
