World Cup

With things winding down for the summer, anyone plan on following the World Cup? I only watch soccer every 4 years, but the passion makes for great television.

No question here about who I cheer for: Deutschland

I play pick-up soccer a couple of times a week and there are four Germans that play regularly. After yesterday's match we talked about the World Cup and Team Germany:

- we're unsure about who will be starting goaltender (Adler is injured and Loew has not named his go-to-guy as of yet) but Neuer is believed to be it. So the team will have to win with the backup.

- With Ballack injured, the skipper is out, and not that he is the Ballack of yore, who could decide matches on his own, but his leadership is difficult to replace. Rolfes and Traesch are also injured, further weakening the midfield. Schweinsteiger looked harmless last Saturday during the Champions League final... let's hope he can kick it up a notch. The midfield is suspect.

- The defense is hit and miss. They are capable of playing well but seem inconsistent, especially against speedy strikers.

That said, the German team has always been a tournament powerhouse, improving performances from game to game. It will take a miracle to make the finals with all the injuries and I honestly don't see it happening.

Never the less, I have got to cheer them on. :beerchug:

Sounds like Germany have a number of problems, for the most part England seem pretty healthy, should be good.

Damn straight.

The expectations are high - as they normally are with any German squad... Deutschland shares the record for most FIFA World Cup finals with Brazil and often times seems to find ways to win, even when the opponent is very good or sometimes even better.

Group D has the Germans paired with Ghana, Serbia and Australia. This is not going to be a cakewalk for Loew and his men. Serbia might be underrated but they are probably in better form than the other three teams in this group. Ghana has some injuries to deal with as well, but they are technically gifted. I say every game will count in this group. Goal differential may decide on who moves on to the round of 16.

Trade you for what the USA pulled...But italy and Brazil unless they just fold up got walks compared to everyone else.. Those 2 should come out of their groups with 3 wins and likely a stupid goals diff

Well, let's see here...USA first and foremost, Germany, Scotland, Australia. Other than those, I tend to root for countries of players I like.

The final 23 man roster for the USA is somewhat suspect, but you can't look at experience when it comes to the WC. Just have to look at skill and heart now.

I am not ashamed to be a bandwagon fan for the world cup. More fun to then watch more of the matches.

USA for home country
Germany - Heritage
Greece - Knows Friends from there
Netherlands - ditto

Going to enjoy watching North Korea get killed though. Looks like they are taking a page from the Russia/Georgia issue and start a war during the event. It's too bad that NKor and SKor wouldn't be able to play unit the Semi Finals (I think?) A match between them now would be crazy from all the hatred. :)

No Ukraine..... :-(

Go everybody! I sure love me some world cup soccer. In Brazil government workers and bankers are allowed to leave early the days that Team Brazil plays. Makes me wish they did the same thing here for Olympic Hockey, or had Super Bowl Monday.......

Being Scottish i'll be following to FOOTBALL World Cup and will be supporting anyone who plays against England! So having said that will be wearing my USA shirt on 12th June and watching USA take on the English, in Rosie McCaffrey's pub on Camelback, with the irish and hopefully few other Scots. The atmosphere in South Africa just won't be the same without the Scots and Irish - at least the bars won't run out of drink!
Please no replies from English folk reading this thread - I cannae be arsed replying to you! You know we're the most liked football fans in the world, the awards weve got speak for themselves, and all England can talk about is 1966! We may not be there, again, but at least we don't have the fastest goal conceded in World Cup qualifier history (San Marino popped one past England in only 8 seconds into the game ha! ha!).
C'mon USA!
