Coyotes (not the hockey kind) in Chaparral Park

Postby yotesreign on Wed Jul 07, 2010 6:13 pm

Just saw a news report on Fox 10 about the coyotes (the animal, not the hockey kind) running around in Chaparral Park in old Scottsdale, and how you can take some pennies and put them in a empty soda can wrapped in foil and shake it to scare them off. Sounded like the local residents were worried about their kids and kittens being out when the coyotes are roaming. Made me think somebody should round up some of them coyotes and ship them up to Winnipeg. Be funny to imagine 500,000 people showing up to welcome the coyotes and all that shows up is a small dhl truck with a few pens of desert animals... like that truck somebody here had a photo of awhile back...

Apparently, there are already coyotes in Ontario. :wow:

In Canada, the coyote still inhabits its traditional habitats, the aspen parkland and short- and mixed-grass prairie in the three prairie provinces. However, it has spread north into the boreal forest, west into the mountains, and east into Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces. The progress of this dramatic "invasion" has been carefully charted; for example, coyotes established themselves in Ontario about the turn of the century, in Quebec in the 1940s, and in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the 1970s. Most astonishing of all, coyotes have recently been discovered in western Newfoundland, apparently having crossed on the ice from Nova Scotia.

Well, if you want to really look at the prevalence of Canis Latrans, here's a good reference

NOTE: Coyote Range in the bright yellow

As you can see they're almost everywhere in North America...

And some trivia...

"Coyotes are very good swimmers. In areas of the northeast United States, where coyotes have migrated since the 20th century, the animals have colonized the Elizabeth Islands of Massachusetts" (National Geographic)

If coyotes can colonize islands, why can't they play hockey in the desert? :D

I'm getting more worried that they could take over the world...
